3D DOT GAME HEROES GAMEPLAY SERIES
The game delivers a series of minigames that go a long way to breaking up the flow, but this is essentially a higher-resolution take on Legend of Zelda. The problem is that the joke is essentially a single note, and after that wears off, you're stuck playing a game that's going to feel very familiar to those of us who grew up in the 80s. The game is laugh-out-loud funny in places, and the creators of the title clearly hold classical game design in high esteem. It merely changes how your hero looks, not what they do or where they go. It's a fine feature, but adds more of a hook to the game than anything that's going to keep the actual gameplay fresh. Expect piles of licensed characters to be available soon after launch. You'll be able to export the created file and send it to friends or upload it online to share with anyone who wants to use your creation. Create your hero, give him or her a few animations, and off you go. The game allows you to create your own heroes using the simple, three-dimensional content creation tool included in the main game. Just like the games on the NES, you'll need to have some defense mechanisms against frustration if you hope to beat the game.

It's not an easy game, and you may very well find yourself lost with no simple way to find what to do next. The humor of the game plays great at the beginning, but you'll be spending hours playing through the puzzle-filled dungeons of the game, using strategies honed by playing the 8-bit originals. Even the music sounds like themes from the Legend of Zelda. You'll gain bombs and a boomerang very quickly.

You'll gain magical swords that are at their full, nearly obscene power when you have full health. While the game begins with the premise of Zelda, it doesn't do much when it comes to building off it. It's a great way to present the game, and it feels like a mix of both old and new technology. The world and characters have been created with blocks, giving everything a very minimalist look, and the game focuses on a very narrow band of the screen, similar to tilt-shift photography, which makes it seem as if you're looking at tiny things moving in a tiny world. Yes, the game is aware that all these things have been done before, but that doesn't excuse the fact that it simply retreads very old ground while winking at us.īut you'll want to forgive 3D Dot Game Heroes the minor sin of falling in love with the past it's trying to recreate and mock, because the art style is beautiful. The game takes the premise behind the Zelda titles and makes fun of them-it's filled with tongue-in-cheek references to other games of the past and the present-but after you put in a few hours you'll notice that these tropes aren't used to subvert the genre, they're merely being repeated. You are given the job of a legendary hero, told where to find a magical sword, and off you go to tackle your first dungeon. But hey, it took Nintendo roughly 15 years to add multiplayer options to Zelda (in the Four Swords Adventure bonus mode to 2002’s Link to the Past on Game Boy Advance), so we guess we can give the game a pass on this one.The game's story addresses the fact that the future is in 3D, and you see the world of 8-bit adventure pop into the third dimension during the game's introduction. The game’s LEGO-style building mechanic for creating characters seems perfect for laying out puzzles for our friends. We’re slightly bummed that there won’t be a level editor or multiplayer options to pad out the experience. We saw the start of a racing minigame and a level of a tower defense-style minigame, the latter of which will be expanded significantly for the US version of the game.Įverything in 3D Dot Game Heroes is beautifully presented using real-time lighting effects that clash wonderfully with the purposefully low-fi animation and art style, and there are a ton of hidden swords to collect, each with its own attributes and often goofy design.

Expect to upgrade your life by finding “apple containers,” stay at inns to get “poof-poof” massages (A clear shout-out to theDragon Quest games) and take part in some fun optional minigames. As far as the gameplay of 3D Dot Game Heroes is concerned, it’s nothing revolutionary, and that’s part of the joke.
